June 14th was the big day for our first-ever PSA Lake Washington Trout Derby, and it turned out to be a terrific event. The weather was excellent and the fish were biting. Can't ask for better than that!
We had a total of 48 entrants -- many of them experienced Lake Washington fishers. We were pleasantly surprised by the number of large fish, with the majority being Cutthroat in the 2-lb. to 5-lb. range.
First prize of $400 was garnered by Doug Wiviott of Newcastle with a lunker 5-lb., 1 oz. Cutthroat. Richard McIintosh Jr. of Mercer Island scored a 3-lb. 12-oz. Cutt for second prize money, and Brandon Siegrist of Bellevue with his 3-lb. 10-oz. Cutt took third place money.
Most people trolled with downriggers, although the winning fish came sans-downrigger on four colors of leaded line in front of spinner and worm.
After a frigid spring, the Lake's surface temperature was only in the high 50s, so the fish were relatively shallow.
